Stucco exteriors in Alhambra

Stucco is not siding with a different surface. Siding is a bonding problem. Stucco is a substrate problem. It is masonry, it is porous, and it cracks as the building moves and as the weather cycles. Paint does not bridge a crack. It follows it.

So the sequence starts with the cracks. Each one gets opened up and cleaned out rather than skimmed over, then filled, because a crack sealed only at the surface comes back through the new coat. Then the patch gets matched to the texture around it. Stucco has a pattern, and a smooth repair in the middle of a textured wall reads as a scar the moment side light hits it. Paint does not hide that. It makes it easier to see.

Color raises the standard. A deep navy with white trim shows more of the wall's surface than a pale color does, so the crack repair and texture matching get signed off before any finish coat goes near it. Every elevation gets walked, not just the front. Sun-facing walls usually take the worst of the chalking and cracking, and they are the ones that show it first.

Interiors and ceilings in Alhambra

A vaulted ceiling with exposed beams is two jobs sharing one surface. The ceiling plane takes a paint finish. The beams are stained wood and stay stained. Different materials, different products, and a long hand-cut line at every junction between them.

That decision gets made before anything is masked. Painting original stained woodwork is effectively irreversible. Once a beam is coated, going back means stripping it. So the beams stay as they are and the ceiling works around them. Tape alone does not hold a clean line against rough-sawn wood, which is why those edges get cut in by hand.

Height changes the method as well. A vaulted plane has to be kept wet edge to edge, or the laps flash where one pass dried before the next reached it. That calls for staging that lets a full run be worked in one go, not a ladder moved every few feet. Angled ceilings also catch light at a grazing angle. Level 4 and level 5 drywall is smooth and unforgiving under downlights, and a vault puts every seam and every roller mark in that same raking light.
