How Much Does Drywall Repair Cost in LA County?

We price drywall by the patch, so you know the number before we start rather than watching an hourly clock run.

Multiple patches in the same room cost less per patch than a single call-out, because the setup, masking and cleanup only happen once.

What each size of repair actually involves

The price gap between a small and a large patch is not markup. It is a different job.

• Small patch, up to 4 inches. Filled with spackle or a small mesh kit, sanded, texture matched, primed and painted. Nail pops get the old fastener reset first, otherwise it pops again in a year.
• Medium patch, up to 6 inches. The damaged area is cut out square, wood backing is installed behind the opening, and a new piece of drywall is fitted, taped, mudded in coats, sanded, textured and painted. You cannot spackle a six inch hole and expect it to hold.
• Large patch, 6 inches and up. Same as medium, plus the underlying cause has to be dealt with. On water damage that means finding the source and confirming the framing and insulation behind the wall are dry before anything gets closed up.

Texture matching is the whole job

Anyone can fill a hole. Making it disappear is the skill.

LA County walls and ceilings carry a lot of different textures. Orange peel, knockdown, skip trowel, hand-troweled Spanish finishes on older San Gabriel and Pasadena homes, and smooth level-five walls in newer builds. Each one is applied with a different tool, a different mud consistency and a different pressure.

Get it wrong and you end up with a patch that is structurally fine and visible from across the room in raking afternoon light. That is the single most common complaint we get called in to fix, and it is almost always someone else's repair.

Ask any bidder how they will match your texture. If the answer is vague, keep calling.

Water damage needs the cause fixed first

A water stain on a ceiling is a symptom. Patching over it without finding the leak means doing the same repair again in six months, and by then the framing behind it has been wet for half a year.

On any water-damaged section we check that the source has been fixed and the cavity is dry before we close it up. Stains also need a stain-blocking primer, because plain paint will not hold them back. They bleed straight through and reappear within weeks.

When repair stops making sense

Patching is almost always cheaper than replacing. Three situations flip that.

• Damage across more than roughly a third of a wall. At that point the patches cost more than a new sheet and the finish is less consistent.
• Repeated cracking in the same line. That is usually movement, not drywall, and filling it again just resets the clock. It needs diagnosing first.
• Widespread soft or crumbling board. Long-term moisture. Patching sound board next to compromised board does not work.

Repairs before a repaint

If you are painting a room anyway, do the drywall first and do it in the same visit. Fresh paint over unrepaired walls highlights every dent and nail pop, because a uniform sheen gives the eye a clean reference. Damage that was invisible under ten-year-old flat paint jumps out under a new coat.

Bundling repairs into a repaint is also the cheapest way to buy them. The masking, setup and cleanup are already paid for.
